Wait two minutes before cutting the cord

Doctors and midwives should think twice about when exactly to cut the umbilical cord following childbirth. Although the tendency in western countries is to clamp and cut the cord immediately after a baby is delivered, a study published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) indicates that delaying the procedure for a minimum of two minutes provides health benefits for full-term newborns.

All human beings feel emotions, such as happiness, sadness, fear and anger. Emotion will be the focus of two presentations by visiting speaker Dr. Richard Davidson, being held in conjunction with Brain Awareness Week on Wednesday, March 21. Davidson was listed by Time magazine as one of the world's 100 most influential people in 2006.

Post-secondary focus for federal budget

The federal budget brought good news for universities. An increased funding transfer to the provinces, new dollars for research, money to relocate the CANMET MTL lab to the McMaster Innovation Park, funding for a new CFI program, and graduate scholarships were all announced Monday by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

Everything came up roses for Iwona Centurami at the annual Ontario Flower Growers Student Design Competition on March 8. The Mohawk College Continuing Education student and McMaster alumni officer won second place in the competition's royal wedding theme category.

McMaster hosts March Break Saturday

It's March break for area high school students, and that means thousands will be touring campuses across the country to get a closer look at campus life. This week, McMaster will host approximately 1,900 prospective undergraduate students for 90-minute campus tours. In addition, about 2,200 people are expected to visit the campus on Saturday, March 17.

McMaster hosts Ontario Biology Day conference

University students from across Ontario will attend the annual Ontario Biology Day conference at McMaster on March 17 and 18. They will present results from their senior honours research projects, which are conducted under the supervision of faculty members at various universities.

McMaster delegates win five awards at Model UN

McMaster delegates joined more than 500 university students and proved their diplomatic abilities at the Canadian Model United Nations (CANIMUN), winning a total of five awards. CANIMUN, the nation's largest UN simulation, welcomed delegates from all over Canada and the world for intense debate at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa from March 7 to March 10.

McMaster engineering teams bring home silver

Both teams representing McMaster at the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) in Saskatoon last weekend finished in second place. Corey Centen and Nilesh Patel, inventors of the CPR Glove, and fourth-year electrical and biomedical engineering students, earned silver in the Innovative Design category.
