Smitherman will discuss Quality and Sustainability in Ontario's Healthcare System. He will be joined by Michael Decter, former founding chair of the Health Council of Canada, and Angie Heydon, chief administrative officer of the Ontario Health Quality Council.

The event will bring together DeGroote alumni, faculty, students and healthcare leaders for an opportunity to socialize and network.

“We're very excited about this year's event,” says Saul Melamed '02, program consultant with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. “It's a great opportunity for current and future leaders in the healthcare field to re-connect with old friends, make new contacts and learn from top-notch speakers. This is the kind of event that really adds value to a degree and the organizing committee should be proud of the work that has been done to put all the pieces together.”

The Health Services Management MBA at DeGroote is designed specifically to bring a business focus to the management of healthcare. This program focuses on providing students with a solid grounding in business fundamentals such as management, planning, operations, and evaluation as well as a broad orientation to the health system.

Associate professor Wayne Taylor, director of the HSM program, says, “Our graduates have the problem-solving skills that are really, really needed. Our goal at DeGroote is to have our students leave with the capacity to influence the healthcare industry in a positive way.”

The DeGroote-HSM alumni event happens this evening at 6 p.m. at The National Club, 303 Bay Street, Toronto.
