CPRGlove, Digital Dash win at regional entrepreneurship competition

Two business ventures seeded at McMaster University took first and third at the Wes Nichol LaunchPad $50K regional entrepreneurship challenge held in Waterloo on April 4. Corey Centen, Nilesh Patel and Sarah Smith, students from the electrical and biomedical engineering program at McMaster, won the competition. Their company, Atreo Medical Inc., is pursuing commercialization of the CPRGlove, a medical device designed to help people properly deliver CPR, improve training practices and increase survival rates from cardiac arrest.

Medical radiation risks: the myths, the facts and the research

Radiation. It's a hot topic (no pun intended) that seldom conjures up many positive images, linked often with words like "toxic," "hazard," "threat" or "risk." While thousands of Canadians have benefited from the use of radiation as a medical therapy to kill their cancer cells and shrink their tumours, there are those who believe that any dose of radiation is life threatening. Much is misunderstood about the effects of medical radiation -- an issue that radiation biologist Doug Boreham will address in the Science in the City lecture, Medical radiation: the good, the bad and the ugly, on Tuesday, April 8.

Medical school opens starter home in Kitchener

The first home for the Waterloo Regional Campus of the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine was celebrated with an open house last week to show off its space in an office tower at 50 Queen Street North, Kitchener. "Institutions plant their roots deeply in a community," said John Milloy, MPP for Kitchener Centre and the Ontario Minister for Training, Colleges and Universities. "I'm proud of the success the province is having increasing medical school enrolments while putting an emphasis on innovations like McMaster which has students out in the community learning first hand."

Making a global difference: One family physician’s story

A developed country like Canada faces many of the same diseases as developing countries, but the contrasts in the magnitude are sometimes startling. Cervical cancer is preventable in the majority of Canadian women by early detection with Pap screening followed by effective treatment. In poor countries however, cervical cancer is the most common cause of death and years of life are lost due to cancer in women.

Grant from Grammy Foundation is music to the ears — and the mind

The McMaster Institute for Music and the Mind (MIMM), based in the Faculty of Science, has been awarded a prestigious grant from the Grammy Foundation in the United States. The University is the only Canadian institution to receive such honours. The Foundation, which works in partnership with The Recording Academy, known internationally for the Grammy Awards, awarded McMaster nearly $40,000 to support research in the Suzuki Early Childhood Education program.

Next steps in Campus Parking Strategy

April marks the next stage in McMaster's Campus Parking Strategy, as the first group of permit holders begins using the new parking garage under the Ron Joyce Stadium. Beginning April 7, approximately 40 permit holders will be the first to park under the soon-to-be completed stadium. Permit holders across campus were given opportunity to voluntarily shift from their current lot to the new underground facility. Others will move to the garage once construction is completed.

Synchronized swim team to compete in Australia

Several McMaster swimmers are getting ready to make a splash down under. In mid-April, six members of the McMaster Synchronized Swim Team will travel to Perth, Australia to represent Canada in the 2008 FINA Masters World Aquatic Championships.

DeGroote recognizes alumni, students and faculty

The DeGroote School of Business will recognize outstanding leadership at its annual Accolades event on April 3. Alumna Teresa Cascioli, former CEO of Lakeport, will be presented with the 2008 Wayne C. Fox Distinguished Alumni Award. Cascioli, who coined the slogan "24 for $24" and sparked a price war in the competitive beer industry that changed the way beer is marketed, graduated from DeGroote in 1983 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Senior forward Joe Polizzi was honoured as this year's recipients of the Liam Stevens Award. The award was presented at the McMaster Marauder Courtside Club year-end banquet by Liam's parents, Angela and Dale Stevens.

New learning management system chosen

McMaster has selected a new learning management system (LMS). The Blackboard Learning System was chosen after an extensive pan-university selection and evaluation process led by the Learning Technologies Resource Centre (LTRC). The new system will replace WebCT 4.1. "Identifying a system that facilitates McMaster's diverse teaching and learning needs, provides cutting edge improvements and meets faculty, student and administrative expectations was the biggest challenge," says Bart Strong, executive director of the LTRC. "Blackboard does this and more."

Titles Bookstore hosts launch for alumna’s book of poetry

A book launch for McMaster alumna Carol Ramsden Deckert's new book of poetry, In the Shadow of the Sun, will be held at Titles Bookstore today from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The introduction to the book was written by Lorraine York, professor in the Department of English & Cultural Studies.

18 DeGroote business students win internships

Four Commerce students from the DeGroote School of Business received job offers last night at the finale of the School's fourth annual MARS Apprentice competition. A total of 18 McMaster students have received internships through the Apprentice since the competition began in 2002.

McMaster Innovation Park prepares for first tenants

Move-in day is approaching for the first tenants of the McMaster Innovation Park located at 175 Longwood Road South. The UN University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health, which is currently located in McMaster's Downtown Centre, will move in within the next week. The Institute will occupy 6,000 square feet on the second floor of the building.

Anthropology students publish book on childhood diseases

Fourth-year students in professor Ann Herring's Anthropology of Infectious Disease course have spent the past three months researching diseases that affected children in Hamilton more than 100 years ago. Their findings have been published in a book entitled Surviving the Early Years: Childhood Diseases in Hamilton at the Turn of the Twentieth Century.

What do campus gardens, athletic facilities and scholarships have in common? They were all made possible through the generous donations of McMaster alumni and graduating students. To recognize these gifts and encourage future graduating classes to give back, "Red Tag" posters are appearing across campus. Since the creation of McMaster University in 1887, students and alumni have generously donated their time and money to make McMaster what it is today.

What happens when nursing students from Japan get a chance to learn side-by-side with Canadian students in a problem-based learning (PBL) tutorial at McMaster University? Their whole world opens up. That's what happened last week as the Faculty of Health Sciences' International Health Office hosted students and professors from Niigata University and Saitama Prefectural University.

McMaster offers mental health services for students

The Campus Health Centre (CHC) and Centre for Student Development (CSD) provide treatment and support for students with mental health concerns. In recent years, the need for this kind of care has greatly increased, and Student Affairs has responded by supporting the creation of the Mental Health Team.
