Easy Summer Orientation Program guides new students

File photo.”]First-year students and their parents are invited to attend McMaster's Easy Summer Orientation Program from July 2 to 10 and 17. The goal of the program is to assist students with their transition to the academic side of university life.
Students will participate in a variety of sessions that will address their needs as new students. First-year psychology professor Joe Kim and his assistant Matt Pachai will present a workshop that focuses on the difference between university and high school academics, focusing on study strategies, note-taking and test writing.
Tim Cameron will offer a session on why goal-setting is important and how it transcends into adult life. Award-winning business professor Nick Bontis is starring in a motivational video that depicts the life of a university student.
An interactive session being organized by the McMaster Libraries will help students become familiar with the library system and meet other students while on a “mission to succeed.” Parents can attend a session on how to deal with the transition they will face when their children become university students.
In addition to this program, students will have an opportunity to attend academic counseling sessions with their faculty advisor, who will help them choose and register for courses. Some faculties will offer a computer lab component for students to access SOLAR, McMaster's online course selection software.
The Easy Summer Orientation Program gives first-year students the opportunity to meet peers from their own faculty as well as students from other faculties. They will interact with upper-year student volunteers, who can provide information and insight about their own university experiences.
Students will receive a Student Success Guide that includes valuable information about the services and resources available to them at McMaster. Parents will also receive the First Year Experience Office Parent Calendar, which has important information and dates relevant to students and their families beyond first year.
Last year's program had almost 2,000 participants. This year, 2,500 students and their families are expected to attend. For more information, please visit the Easy Summer Orientation Program website.
