New line-up for School of Arts Celebrity Concert Series

The School of the Arts has announced its new line-up of enriching concerts in the Celebrity Concert Series. The series provides the McMaster community with the opportunity to take in performances by a variety of local and international musicians. The School of the Arts is also hosting a series of free lunchtime concerts throughout February and March. All performances take place in Convocation Hall.

Even stars get fat

Researchers have discovered evidence that blue stragglers in globular clusters, whose existence has long puzzled astronomers, are the result of 'stellar cannibalism' in binary stars. In other words, binary stars are eating each other and turning into a blue straggler.

Star gazers take note: McMaster’s planetarium re-opens

For more than a year, the William J. McCallion Planetarium, which digitally projects a representation of the night sky onto its domed ceiling, has been shuttered while it undergoes a major renovation that includes new equipment, theatre-style seating and the latest in digital technology and computer software.

Several McMaster University students have scored the hottest ticket in Washington. Nadia Oryema, Valerie Phoon, Irena Rebalka and Paul Athanasopoulos are among a select group of international university scholars invited to attend the U.S. presidential inauguration of Barack Obama.

Interactive Ontario and McMaster kick-off video game career series

A new initiative to promote careers in Ontario's video game industry will be launched at McMaster University on January 14 with speakers from Bedlam Games. The Department of Computing and Software is hosting the first Go Into Games (GIG) Speaker Series event organized by Interactive Ontario, a not-for-profit trade organization representing more than 200 members in the digital media industry.

Award-winning biochemist Michel Bouvier will speak at the second annual Biology and Pharmacology Program Lectureship. His lecture, G-Protein-Coupled Receptors as Oligomeric Signaling Machines: Insights into the Molecular Basis of Drug Efficacy will focus on his extensive research into G-protein coupled receptors.

Commerce students in philanthropy course grant $20,000 to local charities

What would you do if someone gave you $20,000 and told you to give it away to someone else? Who would you give it to? How would you decide? These are questions that a group of undergraduate students have been asking themselves in an innovative new course at the DeGroote School of Business. Yesterday, the students came to an answer when they awarded how much money to who.

Scientists can now differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells

One of the current handicaps of cancer treatments is the difficulty of aiming these treatments at destroying malignant cells without killing healthy cells in the process. But a new study by McMaster University researchers has provided insight into how scientists might develop therapies and drugs that more carefully target cancer, while sparing normal healthy cells

APS Fellowship an engineering first at McMaster

Jamal Deen, professor of electrical and computer engineering at McMaster, has been elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS). He is the first engineering professor at McMaster to receive this recognition. The fellowship also places Deen in a rare position in Canada, that of being elected Fellow of APS, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and the Electrochemical Society (ECS) for his scholarly work in science, engineering and technology.

Final preparations for return to Brandon Hall

The University continues final preparations for the Sunday, January 4 return to campus of Brandon Hall residents displaced by October's fire. With exams complete, all students have now moved out of the interim hotel accommodation. Prior to moving, students received specific instructions about packing belongings and other move-back procedures.

Winners of the Michael G. DeGroote Fellowship Awards announced

Two young investigators with diverse clinical and scientific backgrounds are the inaugural recipients of the Michael G. DeGroote Post-Doctoral Fellowship Award. Kelly O'Brien is a physiotherapist who earned her PhD from the University of Toronto and joined the School of Rehabilitation Science at McMaster University in September 2008. Her research interests focus on the disability experienced by adults living with HIV/AIDS.
