Company using McMaster technology wins innovation award

The company, which manufactures hearing aid devices using technology licensed from McMaster, has been named one of three winners of the second annual Innovations@Work Awards. The awards program is run by Rogers Cable Communications and Profit Magazine.

VitaSound Audio integrates disparate technologies from different sources to deliver affordable, accessible hearing enhancement and protection devices. Some of these devices are based on neurocompensator-based hearing aid advancements developed by McMaster research teams led by Sue Becker, professor of psychology, neuroscience and behaviour, along with Simon Haykin, distinguished university professor of electrical and computer engineering, Ian Bruce, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering.

“While our goals may sometimes exceed our capacities, our ability to think outside the box is what has put us on the path to success,” said Gora Ganguli, president and CEO, VitaSound Audio. “This acknowledgement from Rogers and PROFIT that creativity is crucial to the future success of Canadian businesses and industries is encouraging for us as a small business.”

The other two award winners are iMD Health, which develops interactive images for patient diagnoses, and Mad Rock Marine Solutions for developing a fail-safe release hook technology for lifeboats.

Launched in 2007, the Innovations@Work Award program recognizes Canadian businesses with fewer than 20 employees for innovative approaches to products, services and business management. The only award of its kind in Canada, it celebrates the next generation of innovative small companies whose big ideas move their businesses and their industries forward.
