Scholarship helps MD student pursue family medicine

Solveiga Pranaityte, a second-year medical student at McMaster, is the 2007 recipient of the Nycomed (formerly ALTANA Pharma) Family Medicine Scholarship. Each year, this fund gives a medical student from each of the medical schools across the province a $5,000 scholarship if they pursue family medicine as their specialty. Pranaityte is the third student from McMaster to receive the award.

Students across Canada are rolling up their sleeves to donate blood as part of the Blood 101 challenge. The goal is to collect 2,070 units of blood nationwide.

A new online program helping McMaster faculty, managers and staff efficiently complete Job Hazard Analysis forms is now live. Completion of the forms by all supervisors and staff is a key mandatory requirement as McMaster prepares for the upcoming Workwell health and safety audit this spring.

Statue takes math to new heights

If you find yourself standing under the east light well in Hamilton Hall, look up and you'll meet a historical figure -- not in the flesh, but a sculptural version of the third century Greek mathematician Anatolius. The figure is part of a three-piece sculpture that was installed last month to complement the award- winning interior of the James Stewart Centre for Mathematics. It will be officially unveiled on Sunday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m.

E-book collection grows

A year ago, McMaster University Libraries provided access to 50,000 e-books. That number has since grown to more than 240,000 e-books that can be found by searching the library catalogue.

Proper hand washing is the most effective action you can take to protect yourself from many common illnesses, including the cold, influenza and gastrointestinal illnesses (often mistakenly called the stomach flu). Washing your hands also helps protect those around you if you are sick.

University plans for implementation of city trucking bylaw

Last September, the City of Hamilton passed a bylaw prohibiting trucks from accessing McMaster through the Sterling Street entrance. A short term exemption to the bylaw allowing limited truck travel at the Sterling entrance ends January 31 which means all trucks will have to move through the centre of campus.
