Website explores Peace and War in the 20th Century

The William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections at McMaster University Library is launching the latest in a series of digital initiatives aimed at bringing its unique collections to a wider, online audience. The new site, Peace and War in the 20th Century, has been developed with the assistance of almost $100,000 in funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canadian Memory Fund.

Marauder Plaza celebrates student support

The official opening celebration of Marauder Plaza will recognize McMaster students for their ongoing commitment and financial contributions to athletics and recreation at the University. "Without the leadership and vision of the student leaders involved in the referendum and the planning of the facility, improvements to McMaster's athletic facilities would not be possible," said Therese Quigley, director of Athletics and Recreation. "Students are enjoying the faciliies and programs that the leaders of yesterday created for the students of today."

Shorter course of radiation therapy benefits women in early stages of breast cancer

Women with early-stage breast cancer who receive a shorter, more intense course of radiation have a low risk of side effects and recurrence of the cancer more than a decade after treatment, a Canadian study has found. Researchers discovered that the shorter, three-week treatment -- called accelerated hypofractionated whole-breast irradiation -- is just as effective as the standard five-week course of radiation following surgery to remove the malignancy.

Making a difference in the community

From cleaning up garbage to caring for orphaned animals, a group of 190 McMaster students did anything but sleep in last Saturday. Instead, they woke up bright and early to volunteer their time and energy to 14 local organizations as part of Mac Serve.

Professor receives Humboldt Fellowship

Philip Koshy, associate professor of mechanical engineering at McMaster University, has been awarded a prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers in recognition of his scientific work on machining processes. The highly competitive fellowship sponsors top-notch, foreign scientists to spend extended periods of time working with German colleagues, and is awarded solely on the basis of the academic record of the recipients.

Important Health and Safety Update – Workwell Audit

There are new developments regarding a possible Workwell health and safety audit at McMaster University. The Workplace Safety & Insurance Board (WSIB) has notified the University that because of the progress made by the entire community in health and safety practices and procedures, a Workwell audit will not be undertaken in 2008.

Nurses without borders

Ten nursing graduates from Oman are expanding their international experience at McMaster University. The visiting group, which arrived from the Middle East in August, is spending two months experiencing McMaster's signature approach to the integration of academic concepts and clinical nursing practice. They are also observing Canadian nursing practice at various sites of Hamilton Health Sciences and other health institutions.

Provincial initiative creates more full-time jobs for new nursing graduates

The Ontario government's initiative to provide full-time work to new nursing graduates is a success, according to a report by researchers at McMaster University's Nursing Health Services Research Unit (NHSRU). The report says the Ontario's Nursing Graduate Guarantee (NGG), an $89-million initiative, is reversing a 20-year trend towards part-time and casual work.

Instead of sleeping in this Saturday, 190 McMaster students will wake up extra early to make a difference in the lives of others. They will be volunteering for Mac Serve, a one-day initiative organized by the Office of Community Service Learning and Civic Engagement (OCSLCE) at McMaster University.

Grand opening of Ron Joyce Stadium: Students and community benefit from generous gift

McMaster students and the Hamilton community are the big winners after the University officially opened the Ron Joyce Stadium Saturday. More than 4,000 spectators took part in the historic event, which included special ceremonies to recognize the generous gift from one of Canada's most accomplished entrepreneurs. Ron Joyce, founder of Tim Hortons, donated $10-million towards the stadium, which together with the new David Braley Athletics Centre, is being heralded as the finest University sports complex in the country.

Students looking for jobs and employers looking to hire them are invited to attend Career Fair 2008, McMaster's largest recruitment event, in the David Braley Athletic Centre on Thursday, Sept. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 100 companies ranging from Abercrombie and Fitch to Xerox will be available to answer questions and network with job hunters.

Professor receives international prize for medical education research

An international prize to recognize high-impact research in medical education is being awarded to a McMaster professor who has been looking for better ways to train doctors for almost 40 years. Geoff Norman, assistant dean of the Program for Educational Research and Development, has been recognized with the 2008 Karolinska Institutet Prize for Research in Medical Education. He will receive the award along with a prize of about $76,000 (50,000 euros) at a ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden, on Oct. 28.
