New campaign urges students to Pop the Bubble

McMaster students are being encouraged to venture out of Westdale and explore all that Hamilton has to offer through a new campus initiative called Pop the Bubble. Created by the McMaster Office of Community Service-Learning and Civic Engagement, Pop the Bubble aims to increase civic awareness and "pop the campus bubble" by encouraging greater participation in Hamilton life.

Fire at Brandon Hall

There's good news for students displaced by the fire in Brandon Hall. Beginning January 4th, the building will be ready for occupancy and all students will be able to move back to campus to start the second term.

Everyone needs a home for the holidays

Every year around this time some students living in residence start to worry. Most students are stressed because of exams, but some are concerned about finding alternative accommodation plans for when Residence closes for the holidays. All residences on campus close over the holidays and students are required to move out by 12 noon the day after their last exam.

McMaster and the Aga Khan University renew ties

A memorandum of understanding has been signed by McMaster University and the Aga Khan University for a new stage to a 25-year collaboration which has developed international nursing schools.

Bourns lecture will challenge nature

He's clashed with Stephen Colbert, chatted with Charlie Rose and talked to TIME magazine about genetic engineering. Lee Silver has appeared in all matter of media, but on Wednesday night (November 26) the Princeton professor will be in our city to deliver this year's Bourns Lecture in Bioethics titled, "Challenging nature: genetic engineering, cloning and the future of the human species."

Scientists to network for better heart health

Today, McMaster University announced the funding of a new research chair that will revolutionize the way we look at heart disease in Ontario. At an event being held at McMaster today, Dr. Sonia Anand is to be announced as the inaugural chair holder of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario/Michael G. DeGroote Chair in Population Health Research at McMaster University.

Richard Fung’s Landscapes unveiled at the Museum

In 2006, the McMaster Museum of Art received a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts - Media Arts Commissioning Program for Landscapes, a new work by Richard Fung, which will be shown for the first time this Thursday, November 20, at the launch of his exhibition at McMaster.

Wong e-classroom considered an incubator for innovative teaching

Students call it "The Cool Room." The Wong e-classroom in Mills Library has all the gadgets - touch-screen technology, dual-boot Apple laptops, a wizard podium capable of running the Internet, a document camera and a video system all run simultaneously on screens around the room. But the Wong e-classroom is far more than a gadget collection.

1.7 million Canadians are victims of identity fraud

Nearly 1.7 million Canadian consumers were victims of identity fraud in the past year, according to a new national survey conducted by researchers at the DeGroote School of Business at McMaster University. These victims spent more than 20 million hours and more than $150 million of their own money to resolve the fraud.

McMaster becomes first Canadian university designated as an ESRI Development Centre

The School of Geography and Earth Sciences has a long history of teaching and research using the Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) suite of products. McMaster was one of the first universities in Canada to sign an annual license agreement with the Institute, and was the first Canadian university to collaborate with a college to offer a certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Consequently, McMaster was a perfect fit for the designation of ESRI Development Centre for Universities (EDC).

Titles unveils the fastest way to get a book

Don't you just hate it when you go looking for a book in a bookstore and the last copy has been plucked from the shelf? Never will you have to experience that pang of disappointment again, at least not in Titles. McMaster University's bookstore has just unveiled a print-on-demand (POD) machine that can spit out a flawless, bound paperback copy that is almost indistinguishable from the original. A 250-page paperback that was used in a test-run of the machine was completed in five minutes.
