Smashing young stars leave dwarfs in their wakeAstronomers have discovered that the large disks of gas and dust around young stars will fragment if two young stars pass close to each other and form smaller brown dwarfs stars with disks of their own. The news was announced this week at the Canadian Astronomical Society in Calgary, Alta, by James Wadsley, assistant professor of Physics & Astronomy at McMaster University, and his student Sijing Shen.

Award-winning journalist honoured at convocationAbraham Ture came to Canada from a refugee camp in Kenya in April, 2000 with his wife and two children. Today he is receiving his Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from McMaster University. He is among the 237 graduates who attended the collaborative nursing program hosted at Mohawk College, Conestoga College and McMaster University.

Commuter Challenge cycles to a closeThe campus has been buzzing this week with the whir of bike wheels as commuters take up the Commuter Challenge for Environment Week 2006. Offering inspiring activities and incentives such as a free HSR ride on Clean Air Day (June 7) prizes and Commuter Hero recognition, the ACT office (Alternative Commuting & Transportation) is 'ACTively' encouraging the McMaster community to get involved and get moving.

The Faculty of Social Sciences will confer degrees at two ceremonies, the first at 9:30 a.m. and the second at 2:30 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held at Hamilton Place.

Pneumonia treatment in nursing homes reduces hospitalizationThere may be no advantage to taking nursing home residents to hospital for treatment of pneumonia. They can do as well if they receive the same medical treatment at their residence; a study conducted by McMaster University researchers and funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has shown.

DeGroote will present 537 degrees for doctor of philosophy, master of business administration and bachelor of commerce. MAPS leaders recognized for long-term serviceTwo officers of the McMaster Association of Part-Time Students (MAPS) have been recognized for their long-term volunteer leadership in the service of part-time students. MAPS president Dave Moore and immediate past-president Carole Armstrong received the Ontario Volunteer Service Award at a ceremony in Hamilton on May 17. They were recognized for service to MAPS of 10 and 5 years, respectively.
