Or maybe not! They are probably still thinking about their next chance to go swimming or when they'll get off work and can join their friends for a BBQ. But very soon they will be thinking about school and all the things they need to do in preparation.

Getting ready means more than packing up belongings, fitting them into two suitcases and moving them into a residence, or buying a GO transit pass for the commute from home. It means knowing what to expect in terms of changes and transitions and being prepared to handle new levels of responsibilities.

McMaster's orientation program, coordinated by the First-Year Experience Office, is designed to help students prepare themselves for these changes and responsibilities.

One of the programs is called Welcome Day, and this year Friday, Aug. 11 has been set aside to welcome McMaster students and their families to campus to attend workshops, meet students and staff, and learn about valuable services and resources available to students to help them succeed academically and socially.

Welcome Day offers workshops on academic skills, common transition issues and challenges, financial issues and parent information sessions. Students can take a bus tour of the local community or of the residence to which theyve been assigned. More than 25 University departments will be available at our information fair to talk to students and parents.

In addition, students have the chance to purchase their MacPass, an all-access pass to the events and activities planned for Welcome Week in September. Titles bookstore will be selling copies of a McMaster Day Planner produced by the Centre for Student Development.

There are many other activities rounding out the day, including a BBQ lunch and opportunities to meet and talk with upper-year students volunteering that day.

Welcome Day is free, but registration is encouraged by logging onto http://fye.mcmaster.ca/welcomeday/index.htm.
