Woodland restoration provides food, habitat for wildlife

McMaster's campus is a little greener, thanks to the efforts of grounds manager Barb Rabicki and the grounds crew, who planted more than 400 native trees and shrubs on the slope behind Whidden Hall as part of a woodland restoration project.

Founding dean of midwifery takes her leave

Karyn Kaufman, who helped midwifery become a respected profession in Ontario and established McMaster University's midwifery program, is retiring as assistant dean. Kaufman, a professor of family medicine and an associate member of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, has been assistant dean for the Bachelor of Health Sciences in Midwifery program since its inception in 1993.

Breaking down barriers for foreign trained workers

As many as 140,000 new immigrants arrive in Ontario each year. According to the Government of Ontario, within five years, newcomers will account for all of the province's net labour force growth. However, many immigrants who want to work in their fields of expertise are unable to do so as their foreign credentials are not recognized in Canada.

Too few internationally educated nurses entering workforce

Ontario has the second highest percentage of internationally educated registered nurses in Canada, but many of those entering the province never become employed as professional nurses, a McMaster University study says.

The new engineering building to be constructed near the front entrance of the University will provide much needed space for a growing number of engineering students and faculty, according to a report made by dean of engineering Mo Elbestawi at the Board of Governors meeting on Thursday, Dec. 14.

The McMaster Board of Governors received a budget update at this morning's (Thursday's) meeting. The Board was informed that McMaster's projected ongoing structural deficit has increased and is currently estimated to grow to $20 million in 2007/08.

Memorial service remembers victims of Montreal Massacre

The flags in front of the Burke Science Building are flying at half-mast today to commemorate the 14 female engineering students who were shot and killed by a gunman at l'Ecole Polytechnique in Montreal on Dec. 6, 1989. McMaster's Anti-Violence Network will hold a memorial service in front of the John Hodgins Engineering Building today from 12:30 to 1 p.m.
