Fellowships awarded to two physics and astronomy researchers

Two McMaster researchers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy have received Killam Research Fellowships that will enable them to devote two years to full-time research. The announcement was made by the Canada Council for the Arts yesterday.

Kinesiology doctoral student wins research award

If getting a degree is like winning a race, kinesiology doctoral student Kirsten Burgomaster would be a marathon runner approaching the finish line. Her research project on Sprint versus endurance training: Metabolic adaptations in human skeletal muscle won the Iovate Graduate Student Award at the Ontario Exercise Physiology Conference in Barrie last month.

Solar car shines at Canadian International Autoshow

The Phoenix, McMaster's solar car, will be on display at the Canadian International Autoshow at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre until Sunday, Feb. 25. This is the Phoenix's debut at the Autoshow. A previous model of the solar car, Fireball II, was showcased at the event four years ago, and attracted a huge audience.

Grab a cup of engineering on Second Life

Info Island II will soon have its first cafe. The Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University is launching Cafe Fireball on Second Life, the popular resident-built 3-D virtual world, on Wednesday, Feb. 21 at 3 p.m. EST (12 noon SLT). All avatars are invited.

Hamilton introduces low-emission diesel buses

Hamilton's white, yellow and blue buses are going green. Earlier this month, the City of Hamilton launched a fleet of 22 low-emission diesel buses that produce 80 per cent less emissions than older models. HSR buses make about 480 trips through campus every weekday, with stops on Main Street, University Avenue and Sterling Avenue.

Tribute planned for Dr. Harold Richardson

A memorial tribute will be held Saturday, Feb. 17 for Dr. Harold Richardson, professor emeritus, pathology and molecular medicine, who passed away on Monday, Feb. 12. Dr. Richardson's family invite friends and colleagues to join them in the Great Hall of the McMaster University Club from 1 to 3 p.m.

SOTA Celebrity Concert Series presents soprano Mary Lou Fallis

Combining humorous wit with operatic talent, soprano Mary Lou Fallis and pianist Peter Tiefenbach will perform at McMaster's Convocation Hall as part of the SOTA Celebrity Concert Series on Friday, Feb. 16. Getting her start at the age of 15 in the CBC-TV production of The Magic Flute, Fallis has performed in numerous oratorios, choral works, and operatic roles.

Douglas Barber, distinguished professor-in-residence in the Faculty of Engineering and member of the Board of Governors at McMaster, was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada on Friday, Feb. 9.

Two McMaster teams move on to National Engineering Competition

Two teams from the Faculty of Engineering at McMaster University took first place at the Ontario Engineering Competition this past weekend to qualify for the Canadian Engineering Competition in Saskatoon next month. Fourth-year electrical and biomedical engineering students Corey Centen and Nilesh Patel won the Innovative Design category against eight other teams with their CPR Glove invention.

Engineering students develop life-saving CPR Glove

Millions of people in North America trained to provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are unable to properly administer the life-saving procedure less than six months later. This includes doctors and nurses. As a result, survival from cardiac arrest remains low.

McMaster to host 2008 Ontario Engineering Competition

Planning is already underway at McMaster University as it prepares to host the 29th Annual Ontario Engineering Competition (OEC) from Feb. 8 to Feb. 10, 2008. The University will welcome more than 200 participants from 14 universities across the province in a series of competitions that challenge the engineering skills, business acumen, communication abilities, and creativity of Ontario's top engineering students.
