MBA Games come to DeGroote School of Business

More than 400 of Canada's best and brightest MBA students will converge on the DeGroote School of Business today for the 2008 MBA Games. This annual national student competition will draw teams from 14 schools from across the country to compete in challenges that will test students' academic knowledge, athletic prowess and school spirit.

Program gives high school students a headstart in engineering

Graduating high school students planning to study engineering at McMaster can now earn up to two university credits during the summer before starting the fall term.

Three students receive RBC scholarships

Nine students across Canada have been awarded RBC Royal Bank Scholarship Awards and three of them are from McMaster. The recipients of the $5,000-gold, $3,000-silver and $2,000-bronze awards were announced last month. McMaster students received awards in each category.

The kindest cut for cancer

Sarah Cook gave the gift that keeps on growing. The development officer cut nine inches of her hair last month and donated it to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths campaign, which uses the hair to make wigs for women who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment.

McMaster University President Peter George has been named to the Order of Ontario. The 27 recipients were announced today by the Honourable David Onley, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Department raises $1,700 for Hamilton Food Share

The Department of Biochemistry & Biomedical Sciences raised more than $1,700 for Hamilton Food Share. Every dollar raised for the organization translates into $10 worth of food through its Food Recovery Program, which collects donations of surplus food from the food industry and provides it to those in need.

The School of Nursing has raised more than $2,000 for initiatives that will benefit McMaster and the local community.

Committee seeks to replace campus photocopiers

The Fleet Copier Steering Committee is in the midst of an intensive process to replace the University's photocopier fleet. A campus-wide photocopier use survey was completed by more than 2,700 staff, faculty and students. The Great McMaster Photocopier Hunt helped tally and locate copiers currently on campus.

New name for Physical Plant

Physical Plant is getting a new name in the New Year. Starting Jan. 1, the department responsible for renovations, maintenance, repair and operation of buildings, utilities and installed systems at the University will be known as Facility Services.

Public health probes gastrointestinal illness outbreak

The City of Hamilton's Public Health Services has received a report of a gastrointestinal illness outbreak associated with a catered event held on Dec. 13 at East Meets West Campus Bistro at McMaster University. There is a possibility that individuals who consumed other food prepared at the East Meets West Bistro may also be ill.

Mills Library recently opened a study space that caters to laptop users. Located on the third floor near the main elevators, the study space features new furniture and wireless Internet access.

Peat moves from the bog to the generating station

For hundreds of years, peat has been used in Ireland, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Belarus and Russia as a fuel source for thermal generating stations. Now Peat Resources Ltd. is looking at replacing the coal that fuels the province's Atikokan Generating Station in northwestern Ontario with peat and wood.

McMaster appoints new associate VP of planning and analysis

McMaster has appointed a new associate vice- president of planning and analysis. Karen Menard's appointment was officially approved at this week's Senate and Board meetings. The position replaces the director of planning and analysis role and now reports directly to the provost.

McMaster University's newly renovated Health Sciences Library is a popular place. Not only is it a busy resource for students, faculty and health care professionals from across the city, it has won the City of Hamilton's Urban Design and Architecture People's Choice Award.

Let’s Talk Science program to raise Atlantic salmon

The rise in volunteer numbers in the Let's Talk Science Partnership Program (LTSPP) at McMaster has left the excited yet overwhelmed coordinator, Diana Dregosc, looking for some extra help. The solution turned out to be Laura Wells, a PhD student in chemical engineering who has taken on the role of co-coordinator.
