Filmmaker Martyn Burke to speak at Alumni Reunion Day

Action! Martyn Burke, an acclaimed filmmaker, author and journalist and proud McMaster alumnus, will speak at Alumni Reunion Day on Saturday, June 7. He graduated from the University in 1964 with a degree in Economics.


His career has included personal encounters with dictators and hitmen, spies and superstars, heroes and villains.

On June 7, award-winning author, filmmaker, journalist and alumnus Martyn Burke will be on campus to share his stories. Burke will deliver a talk entitled “On the Front Lines” as part of Alumni Reunion Day. The talk is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Hamilton Hall, Room 109.

After graduating from McMaster in 1964, Burke worked as a freelance combat journalist in Vietnam. The experience ignited his passion for traveling the globe, and formed the basis for his highly acclaimed novel, Laughing War. In the years since, Burke has directed many feature films and award-winning documentaries. He received a 2012 Peabody Award for significant and meritorious achievement in electronic media for his latest documentary, Under Fire: Journalists in Combat.

Burke was recently interviewed for the Spring 2014 edition of the McMaster Times, and recounted several stories from his time at McMaster and the remarkable career that followed.

A number of classes will celebrate anniversaries at Alumni Reunion Day, including the classes of 1934, 1939, 1944, 1949, 1954, 1959 and 1964. Details on the weekend’s festivities can be found here.
