“Tonight is a great night and the perfect end to a great season. We are incredibly proud of all our student-athletes and their performance on the field, in the classroom and in our community,” said Glen Grunwald, director of Athletics & Recreation.

“As we shine the spotlight on the best of our best, I hope this occasion will be a treasured memory of their time at McMaster.”

Ivor Wynne Award: Chris Garneau

A native of Stoney Creek and graduate of Bishop Ryan high school, Garneau had a season for the ages in 2014-15. The fourth-year competitor compiled a 24-1 record while winning five titles in the 68kg weight class, contributing an OUA gold medal to McMaster’s historic team gold at the OUA Championships — the team’s first title since 1993. He followed up with one of the Marauders two gold medals at the CIS Championship in Edmonton, helping McMaster to team silver on the national stage. The CIS gold brought to an end a dominant year for Garneau in one of the sport’s most competitive weight classes.

Award finalists: Konrad Bald, men’s swimming; Tyler Crapigna, football; Danny Demyanenko, men’s volleyball.

Thérèse Quigley Award: Danielle Boiago

A graduate of Hamilton’s St. Thomas More high school, Boiago led the Marauder women’s basketball team to a terrific season, as the team won the OUA Central Division and spent the entire campaign ranked in the CIS top-ten. Named an all-star in tournaments at Ryerson and Concordia, she finished the season as a first-team OUA all-star. Boiago averaged 18.9-PPG (3rd) and 7.6-RPG (10th) and also ranked among league leaders in steals and 3-point shooting percentage. A team captain, she tied her own team record for 3-point goals in a season (44) and moved into 5th-place on McMaster’s all-time OUA scoring list, while being named team MVP.

Award finalists: Riley Allison, figure skating; Stephanie Black, women’s rugby; Emma Mittermaier, women’s swimming.

“While the Hamilton community is a great supporter of our teams and athletes, Hamilton can take some extra pride this year as both of our Athletes of the Year are local talents,” added Grunwald. “But regardless of their hometown, all of our Marauders are continuing to do the department, the University and the Hamilton community proud.”
