What to do if you missed the deadline to upgrade your MAC ID password!

If you missed the deadline to upgrade your MAC ID password, you might still have time to avoid the inconvenience of having your MAC ID account suspended.

McMaster’s ongoing project to upgrade MAC ID password security requires all MAC ID passwords set before May 19, 2013 to be upgraded. Last month’s deadline for users to voluntarily upgrade their passwords saw a surge of changes.  MAC IDs that were not upgraded are now being expired. A group of 200 not-yet-upgraded accounts is being selected at 9 a.m. each weekday for expiry. Expired accounts lose access to MAC ID resources such as email and Wi-Fi until the password is upgraded.

It is still possible to avoid the inconvenience of having your password expired by proactively changing your MAC ID.

Before Changing your Password

UTS recommends clearing all saved instances of your MAC ID password before changing it. Saved passwords are often found in (for example) email programs on computers and Wi-Fi logins on smartphones. See UTS’s online guide at: www.mcmaster.ca/uts/macid  for additional advice.

How to Change your MAC ID Password

To ease this transition, UTS has prepared an online password change tool at: www.mcmaster.ca/uts/macid. Using this tool, users can change their password in less than a minute.

Your new MAC ID password must be a minimum of 8 characters in length and must include characters from at least three of the four groups below:

  • Uppercase letters: A, B, C, … ,Z
  • Lowercase letters: a, b, c, …,z
  • Numerals: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9
  • Symbols: ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + ` – = { } | ] [ \ : ” ; < > ? , . / ‘

Do not use any of your last five previous passwords. Passwords cannot contain your account name or parts of your full name.

Who Needs to Upgrade

All MAC ID passwords established before Feb. 19, 2013 should be upgraded, even if the current password meets the new standard.

The following groups will have their passwords expired if they do not voluntarily upgrade:

  • All MAC ID users excluding students, but including students who are also McMaster employees
  • Holders of “courtesy” and “guest” MAC IDs
  • Alumni and retiree MAC ID account holders

What Services are Affected

MAC ID provides authentication services to more than 50 applications such as the campus Wi-Fi network, LibAccess, UnivMail, McAuth, and the VPN.

No Email Messages About Your Password

To prevent phishing attacks, UTS has consistently told users that it will not ask them for password information via email. That policy continues to hold true. UTS will not send you an email when your password expires. Do not trust links in emails purporting to be from UTS directing you to change your password. UTS will communicate these changes through other mediums, such as the Daily News.
