Update on potential labour disruption at Ontario’s colleges

Update – Sunday, Oct. 15

Ontario’s College instructors are in a legal strike position at 12:01 am Monday Oct. 16. McMaster encourages both parties to continue to work to avoid a labour disruption.

A strike would impact joint programs offered by McMaster and Colleges including Nursing, B.Tech, MedRadSci and some Social Science programs.

Should a disruption occur, classes, labs, tutorials and clinical placements delivered by McMaster employees at McMaster locations will continue.

At this point,  Mohawk College advises classes offered by College instructors will be suspended.

The Colleges also advise that labs, co-op work terms and field placements will continue.

Clinical placements overseen by College instructors will be suspended.

The union has advised that pickets could be set up at the Main Street entrance to McMaster. Should that happen, please respect the right of the picketers to picket and be patient and courteous entering campus. Expect and plan for delays. Picketers cannot block access to the hospital. Some HSR bus routes may be changed should there be pickets at the Main Street entrance.

McMaster is monitoring the ongoing bargaining between Ontario’s colleges and the union representing instructors.

McMaster is hopeful a negotiated settlement is reached between the colleges and union so that students are spared any impacts from a possible labour disruption.

The Union has advised the Colleges it will strike October 16 should it fail to reach a negotiated agreement.

McMaster will work to minimize the impact of any disruption to students. However, should one occur, some students will be impacted by the disruption at Mohawk College and Conestoga College.

Should a disruption occur, classes, labs, tutorials and clinical placements delivered by McMaster employees at McMaster locations will continue.

At this point, the Mohawk College advises classes offered by College instructors will be suspended.

The Colleges also advise that labs, co-op work terms and field placements will continue.

Clinical placements overseen by College instructors will be suspended.

Individual colleges will provide updates regarding the status of classes on their campuses.

Mohawk College has advised that during the strike:

  • Continuing Education classes and Ontario Learn will continue.
  • eLearn will continue to be available to students.
  • All three Mohawk campuses will remain open with normal hours of operation, however you should expect delays getting into and leaving campus.
  • Labs will remain open.
  • College Student Services will remain open.
