Strategy underway to support international students

A growing number of international students are choosing McMaster to pursue their studies, and a strategy is under development that will aim to support their academic, personal and professional success.

Working groups from across the university with expertise in international student education are providing input and developing plans in three key areas: language and academic skills, careers, and student life, which will include a focus on health care, housing, transition and acculturation.

The working groups will assess current practices, identify gaps and future needs, explore best practices, and provide both short and long-term recommendations.

Sean Van Koughnett, Associate Vice-President, Students and Learning and Dean of Students, is leading the process, along with Peter Mascher, Associate Vice-President, International Affairs, and Doug Welch, Associate Vice-President and Dean of Graduate Studies.

“As the number of visa and international students at McMaster continues to grow, it’s critical that we put in place the supports and resources they need to study, work and thrive,” says Van Koughnett. “Providing a welcoming, supportive environment for our diverse student populations will enrich our community and further strengthen our students’ ability to succeed.”

A final draft of the plan is expected to be completed by October 2017.
