Update: Fire quickly extinguished in Bates Residence

The university appreciates the quick response by Hamilton fire and police services to Saturday afternoon’s fire at Bates Residence, which helped to reduce any potential damage. The incident is still being investigated by authorities.

No one was injured during the small fire, which was contained to a third-floor apartment in the building. As a precaution, the building was evacuated.

Water and smoke damage to nearby units is still being assessed. The building was reopened after being deemed safe by emergency services.

Eight students were affected by the fire. They have been contacted by Housing & Conference Services staff and have been relocated into temporary accommodations on campus.

All other students have returned to their units.
