Search committee for AVP Faculty

The search for the newly created Senate approved position of Associate Vice-Provost (AVP), Faculty is now underway. The list of members appointed by the Senate to the ad hoc Search Committee is shown below.

As this is a part-time position to be piloted for a three-year term, the search will be internal to the McMaster academic community. The AVP role is envisioned to be a three day per week commitment with the exception of the term the Vice-Provost (VP), Faculty will be on an administrative leave. The rationale for this pilot is essentially three-fold. First, the committee that oversaw the reappointment of the Vice-Provost (Faculty) felt that the VP role needed additional support, specifically in the form of a designate which the post currently lacks. Second, provincial government pressure to expand experiential learning opportunities for undergraduate students and its ongoing interest in measuring campus community engagement, as well as social and economic impact (prominent in our third Strategic Mandate agreement) has translated into a substantive uptick in work in these critical areas of the portfolio. Finally, the Provost’s Office has expressed a renewed commitment to building leadership capacity among mid-career faculty, to ensure more effective forms of succession planning.

As the search is now underway, you are invited and encouraged to communicate your views on the characteristics needed to fill the AVP, Faculty role and to provide nominations to any member of the committee including the Provost (provost@mcmaster.ca). For input to be incorporated into the early deliberations of the committee, it should be sent before 12pm on Friday, June 15th. Communications to the Selection Committee will be shared within the Committee but otherwise will be considered confidential.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this important selection process. Please note that self-nominations will also be accepted. Those interested in applying for this position are asked to provide the committee with a CV and a brief statement outlining specific experiences in and contributions towards the undergraduate academic experience, in particular highlighting areas pertaining to experiential learning, community engaged learning, high impact and inclusive pedagogical practice, program review and new program development. The committee will begin its adjudication of these files at its Thursday, June 21 meeting.
