Perspectives on Peace: Peace and Politics

Presented by Dr. Todd Alway, Dr. Greg Flynn, Samantha Jackson, and Sarah Shoker

Thursday, March 24, starting at 1:30 pm – 2:20 pm in TSH B128 and then moving to the Phoenix from 2:20 pm – 4:00 pm for informal discussions

Participants will watch a series of short presentations on different perspectives on the Syrian situation, followed by an opportunity to discuss these perspectives over food and drinks at the Phoenix. The following topics will be covered:

Samantha Jackson, PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science, will discuss Canada’s response to the needs of Syrian refugees, starting with – where did the number 25,000 come from? Who is funding and carrying out our national commitments? How do Canada’s actions measure in the global context?
What does ISIS want and what attracts people to join the organization? Sarah Shoker, PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science, will explore the organization’s regional aspirations and how these aspirations attract membership.
What roles have the United States, Russia, Iran, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia played in the Syrian conflict? Why? What roles might they play in helping to resolve the conflict? Dr. Todd Alway, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, will discuss the wider geopolitical context of the Syrian crisis.
What is the appropriate balance between freedom and security in the Canadian context? Dr. Greg Flynn, Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science, will explore the intersection of state power, law, and freedom in the modern era.
