McMaster Student Wins Prestigious Award

The Inorganic Chemistry Subject Division of the Chemical Institute of Canada is pleased to announce its 2017 student award recipients. James T. Goettel of McMaster University received the Award for Graduate Research in Inorganic Chemistry and Alexander Polgar of Western University received the Award for Undergraduate Research in Inorganic Chemistry.

Goettel works under the supervision of Gary Schrobilgen at McMaster where he specializes in high-oxidation state inorganic fluorine chemistry and noble-gas chemistry research. His doctoral work focuses on the highest oxidation states of xenon, Xe(VI) and Xe(VIII).

Polgar has worked as an undergraduate summer research assistant at both Western and the University of Saskatchewan and completed his BSc. honours thesis, Gold(I) Trimethylsilylchalcogenolate Reagents as Precursors to Luminescent Heterometallic Chalcogenide Clusters, under the supervision of John Corrigan at Western. This research was published in Chemistry – A European Journal in Nov. 2016 with Polgar as lead author.

Goettel and Polgar will present award lectures at the upcoming 100th Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition (CSC 2017), taking place from May 28 to June 1, 2017 in Toronto. Abstract submission for CSC 2017 closes on Feb. 13, 2017.’
