Increased internet security coming this summer

The Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) Project Team within University Technology Services (UTS) are integrating a Next Generation Firewall onto the University network. The Next Generation Firewall will provide protection against common internet threats, preventing malware attacks and protecting the community from malicious websites. This is part of a comprehensive approach towards improving campus IT security.

On Tuesday, July 3, the Next Generation Firewall was physically integrated with the university network.

Through the months of July and August, security policies will be applied to the network through the Next Generation Firewall that will protect web servers from direct attacks from the internet, block malware from being downloaded onto devices on the network, and prevent anyone on the network from connecting to known malicious websites. UTS will follow up with advanced notification before these policies are implemented.

If you have any questions or concerns about the Next Generation Firewall, and how this technology will impact your computing experience at McMaster, please contact the UTS Service Desk: uts@mcmaster.ca, or x2HELP (x24357)
