Athletics director leaving McMaster

After almost five years at the helm of McMaster’s Athletics and Recreation department, Jeff Giles has decided to leave the University for personal reasons.

“Jeff has overseen the department through a tremendous time of growth and transformation,” said Sean Van Koughnett, associate vice-president Students and Learning and dean of Students. “He has been an outstanding supporter of student athletes and his contributions have helped to build McMaster’s reputation as one of Canada’s premier athletics and recreation universities.”

“There have been so many high points during my time with the University,” said Giles. “Seeing the success of the Athletes Care Program, which encourages students to be role models for underprivileged youth in the community, has special significance. Winning the Vanier Cup and then returning to the championship game for a second year are certainly at the top of the list but overriding even those accomplishments has been the chance to get to know so many fabulous students and to work with such talented staff who have an uncompromised commitment to their work.”

Giles will continue with McMaster until June 17. The search for his replacement will begin in the near future.
