Whelan honoured for fight against prostate cancer

Photo courtesy of FHS.”]Dr. Paul Whelan, who holds the David Braley and Nancy Gordon Chair in Urology, has been honoured by the Canadian Prostate Cancer Network for his work in the fight against prostate cancer.

Whelan was one of three people presented with the Reef Knot Award for 2007 at the network's annual conference. He was cited for his distinguished career in research and surgical innovation, as well as advocacy in stressing the important of early detection in the treatment of the disease.

Whelan is a founder of the McMaster University residency program in urology and the McMaster Institute of Urology located at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. His work to build the institute into an academic and clinical centre that provides care, education and research has helped make St. Joseph's one of the busiest laparoscopic prostate surgery centres in Canada.

The Reef Knot Award also recognized Whelan's role in developing a public awareness campaign featuring Canadian actor Steve Smith (a.k.a. Red Green). Smith appeared in television public service announcements, brochures and posters promoting the message for men to talk to their doctors about prostate cancer.

Smith's role in the public awareness campaign developed after he attended a special men-only evening entitled It's a Man's Thing, organized by Whelan and the McMaster Institute of Urology.
