Wellings shot a combined -3 under the first two days, finishing tied for 42nd at the completion of the first two rounds.
The oldest and, second only to the US Amateur, most prestigious amateur championship in the world got underway this week with the first round taking place at Royal Lytham & St. Annes followed by the second round at the St. Annes Old Links.
In round one, Wellings shot a -2 under 69 at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. In round two, he finished with a -1 under 71 on the St. Annes Old Links course.
Wellings ended up drawing Walker Cup veteran and sixth-ranked world amateur Lloyd Saltman in the first round of match play. Despite the tough draw, Wellings played well, but couldn't get any important putts to drop and ended up losing to Saltman on the sixteenth green, 3 & 2.
Wellings's result at this year's Championship should earn him a spot in the world amateur rankings.
In 2006, Wellings qualified and played well during the first two rounds of the British Amateur, only to miss out on moving to the 64-player match-play bracket by one stroke.
