McMaster University enthusiastically welcomes the selection of a much-respected and admired university leader to the important role of Governor General of Canada.

The prime minister has named David Johnston, the president of the University of Waterloo and former principal of McGill University, to the vice-regal post.

“With David Johnston's appointment, the country will soon understand what many in post secondary education have long known – our next Governor General is an accomplished scholar, leader and consensus builder. He is a man of great integrity and intelligence,” says Patrick Deane, President of McMaster University.

“David is an exceptional choice because of his ability to build and grow relationships and to provide thoughtful and gracious leadership. While we'll miss his wisdom and leadership within the University sector, all of Canada will now benefit from his immense talents and engaging manner.”

The Governor General-designate has a long-standing relationship with McMaster, which includes an honorary degree from the University in 2008.

Johnston will be sworn in as Canada's Governor General on October 1.
