The week featured events designed to help new students get to know the campus and each other.

The week started off with move-in weekend as more than 3,000 students unpacked their bags, met their new roommates and made McMaster their home away from home.

Upper-year students serving as Welcome Week reps introduced first-years to their faculties, residences and off-campus societies. Welcome Week reps also led new students in a variety of activities designed to help them make friends and meet their future classmates.

The drama production IRIS, which stands for Inspiration, Reflection, Integrity and Success, was written and performed by McMaster students to give first-years a first-hand look at some of the academic and social challenges they might face at university. Students also met with faculty members and advisors to give them a headstart on their academic responsibilities.

The Drive Hunger Away food drive on Sept. 2 collected about 400 non-perishable food items for United Way agencies, including the Reach Out Centre for Kids (R.O.C.K.), Living Rock Ministres and the Eva Rothwell Resource Centre as well as the MSU Bread Bin Food Bank. Students also shined shoes and cars for Shinerama, a fundraiser for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
