Volunteer profile: Betty Ann Levy

As a researcher, Levy has worked primarily within local schools, which has provided her with a unique opportunity to witness the needs of children in the community first hand.

“They come to school in need of food and clothing, as well as extra academic and social support. United Way-supported agencies help to meet some of these needs,” said Levy. “'It takes a community to raise a child' and the United Way represents our community's response.”

Levy, who grew up in a small town in Nova Scotia where community support was part of the social fabric, recognizes the same kindness and sense of concern towards the welfare of one's community at McMaster.

The McMaster United Way campaign is a campus-wide collaboration that despite tough economic times surpassed its 2008 goal to raise $210 000, which ultimately contributed more than $221 000 to the Hamilton United Way.

For the past year, Levy has been co-chair of the McMaster United Way Campaign which has allowed her to see the results of the funds raised in action.

Levy is quick to acknowledge the hard work of her co-chair, Michele Corbeil, city campaign collaborator, Miriam Gracey, and a dedicated committee of men and women from across campus that make the annual McMaster United Way Campaign a success.

“It has been a rewarding experience to work with these great fundraisers,” said Levy. “Most gratifying of all was the financial support so generously given by the staff, retirees and faculty of McMaster.”

The McMaster United Way Campaign contributes to the local United Way chapter, which supports more than 130 social programs and agencies in the Hamilton/Burlington area.
