Video talks tips on taking out the trash

McMaster's Off-Campus Experience (OCE) is making sure students are fully equipped
for living on their own.

A recently launched video series aims to help students better integrate into the
community and learn how to be better citizens. The first video focuses on something
we all have to do, but can be somewhat more complicated than it seems, especially for
those new to the city.

“Many students come from communities outside of Hamilton where they have different
procedures for garbage and recycling disposal,” said Jennifer Kleven, manager of the
Off-Campus Resource Centre. “We find it's one of the problems that off-campus
students face, and they struggle to adjust when living on their own, so we thought
garbage disposal was an appropriate place to start.”

Kleven says that in addition to sorting garbage and recycling, students also need to be
aware of Hamilton's green bin organic waste program and the City's one container rule.

“We felt that we needed to do something more to help students integrate into their
communities and their homes,” said Kleven. “The videos serve not only to improve our
own services to students, but also to help students themselves get more engaged while
living off-campus.”

After watching the video, students can play an interactive game that teaches them more
about garbage collection in Hamilton.

Future video topics include the ins and outs of signing a lease, how to deal with bed
bugs, ways to get involved in the community and strategies for responsible socializing.
