McMaster University's Security Services personnel work 24 hours a day, seven days a week
to keep the campus community safe - and they do it with less impact on the environment
than you may think.
In 2008 they began the process of making their work more environmentally-friendly. That
was when Security Services began replacing its patrol vehicles with hybrids, purchasing a
2008 Ford Escape hybrid and then a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid. Both cars release less
carbon and have better fuel economy than the old patrol vehicles.
Last fall, Security Services began replacing the lights on things such as vehicle emergency
lighting systems and patrol bikes with LED lights that use less energy and last longer. They
also expanded the use of bikes for patrol, giving officers more mobility while saving on
fueling costs and producing no emissions.
Below, Special Constable Krista Paolini explains the importance of Security Services'
sustainable initiatives and shows off the Chevrolet Malibu patrol car.
