McMaster's Venture Camp has been nominated in the best summer camps category of the Hamilton Community News Readers' Choice Awards.

Last summer, the Venture Engineering and Science, Computer and Technology Camps had more than 1,000 students in Grades 3 to 10, plus a waiting list.

“We are truly excited and honoured to have Venture Camp nominated for a Readers' Choice Award,” said Carm Vespi, manager of alumni relations in the Faculty of Engineering. “The faculty and students have dedicated 18 years to Venture, and this recognition would truly be a great accomplishment.”

The eight-week camp runs through July and August. Students learn about science and engineering through hands-on projects led by McMaster students.

“It's a great program,” said Jessica Durante, camp counsellor and fourth-year math student. “We want to teach kids about the great things math and science have to offer.”

Last summer, the campers built MP3 players, metal detectors and remote control cars. This summer's projects will include building a bubble maker, surround sound speakers and USB charger.

The camp will also offer busing to students living in Stoney Creek and Grimsby.
