The Internet is a powerful tool and an integral part of our lives. As a forum for discussion and debate, research and inquiry, it is a truly global meeting place.

And while we rely on unfettered access to information 24/7, we also need to recognize that there are threats to our security online – whether in the form of email posing as a delivery notice for a surprise care package, that awesome new Android app, or the “free” software you got from your roommate.

So why are you a target, what do hackers want? They want your information, account names and passwords, credit card numbers, even your social insurance number. Ultimately, they want your money.

We at McMaster’s IT Security department recognize the need to protect students, staff, faculty and researchers.

October is Cyber Security Awareness Month, and throughout the month IT Security will offer advice and tips for staying safe online.

Watch for our Daily News articles each week. Keep an eye open for our posters around campus and follow us on Twitter @McMaster_ITSec, where we share even more tips.
