Univmail departs McMaster

After two years and more than 7,000 email accounts transferred, McMaster is officially turning off Univmail.

The project to move McMaster faculty and staff to MacMail, an Exchange-based system that combines both email and calendaring, was a collaboration between University Technology Services (UTS) and Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS) Computer Services Unit (CSU), which already used Exchange to provide email and calendaring services to FHS.

MacMail now provides a common, unified email and calendaring system for the majority of McMaster staff and faculty members. As well, calendaring is now available to all MacMail users.

As a final step in the transition, the Univmail forwarding to MacMail will cease in the coming weeks and emails sent to @univmail.mcmaster.ca or macid@univmail.cis.mcmaster.ca will stop working. Faculty and staff who use the standard format of macid@mcmaster.ca will be unaffected by this change; however, anyone who use macid@univmail.mcmaster.ca or macid@univmail.cis.mcmaster.ca should advise their contacts to use the “univmail” free version of their email address.

“I would like to thank everyone who worked on the project. This was a great example of interdepartmental cooperation between UTS and CSU,” said John Kearney, the University’s Chief Information Officer. “We are one step closer to implementing the Communications and Collaboration Strategy identified in Vision 2020.”
