More than 400 area youth will be able to attend McMaster sports camps over the next two years thanks to support from U.S. Steel Canada.

The steelmaker recently pledged financial support for the McMaster Athletes Care program, which sees varsity athletes work with community youth.

Many of those youth might be unable to attend camp without the support of U.S. Steel Canada.

“We’re very excited about this groundbreaking partnership,” said Jeff Giles, director of McMaster Athletics & Recreation. “It takes our outreach program to a whole new level.”

In addition to sending youth to camp, U.S. Steel Canada’s support will also help maintain the McMaster Athletes Care program.

Volunteers with the program coach sports at local schools, assist with area reading programs, visit patients and families at Ronald McDonald House and work at North Hamilton’s Eva Rothwell resource centre.

“We are very proud to have strengthened our longstanding relationship with McMaster,” said Trevor Harris, director of government and public affairs for U.S. Steel Canada. “The inclusivity of children from all walks of life to participate in a camp environment with their peers truly defines our strong community spirit.

“U.S. Steel Canada wishes all involved, especially the young campers, a safe and enjoyable summer camp.”

More than 4,000 youth attend camps at McMaster throughout the summer.
