Early in the New Year, the McMaster campus will see construction begin on two projects.

The first project is the expansion of the Ivor Wynne Centre the University's athletics and recreation complex. The development will include a new multi-use sports hall, indoor running track, enlarged fitness centre, new locker rooms and an expanded sports medicine clinic. The Athletic and Recreation Complex is a $30-million project scheduled to open in the fall of 2006. It also includes a $13-million one-tier, multipurpose stadium that will enhance the existing Les Prince Field.

The second project is the construction of a new student residence. The location of the new building will be on the north end of central campus near Hedden Hall. It will be constructed to accommodate approximately 400 students on campus in time for the fall 2006 school term.

Construction on both projects is scheduled to begin by March 2005 although members of the McMaster community will see preparation work taking place between now and then. In addition to hoarding being installed, there will also be an access road constructed from Forsyth Road North to Stearn Drive (in front of the Ivor Wynne Centre) and the bleachers at Les Prince Field will be removed.

Drop-in sessions for all members of the McMaster community will be scheduled in January 2005 to share more of the details related to both projects and answer questions particularly the new features of the expanded Ivor Wynne Centre that will be of interest to many people on campus. Further details on the drop-in sessions will be communicated in early January.

A public meeting for local residents is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Dec. 7 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in Gilmour Hall, Rm. 111 council room. This meeting provides an opportunity for the project managers and contractors to provide information to local residents and discuss their specific inquiries and issues.

Inquiries about the construction projects may be directed to Tony Cupido, director of physical plant at ext. 23054.
