A McMaster PhD candidate in health policy has received a prestigious doctoral scholarship from the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation.

Avram Denburg, a 2006 graduate of McMaster’s medical program, is currently working a pediatric oncologist at SickKids Hospital in Toronto. He was one of 16 Trudeau scholars from across the country announced June 9.

The scholars are recognized as exceptional Canadian students who have distinguished themselves through academic excellence, civic engagement and a commitment to reaching beyond academic circles to apply their knowledge and skills to pressing Canadian and global issues.

Denburg is working to construct a more coherent decision-making framework, informed by public values, for funding new cancer drugs for children in Canada.

“Support from the Trudeau Foundation will enable me to dig deep into my doctoral research on pharmaceutical policy for children,” said Denburg. “More important still, it will connect me to a network of Canadian academics, policymakers, and leaders engaged in building bridges between research and policy.

“The opportunities for one’s research to make a real-world difference in this environment are profoundly exciting.”

Recipients of the Trudeau doctoral scholarship receive $60,000 annually over three years to work with a community of scholars, mentors and fellows to accelerate their professional growth.

The foundation, established as a memorial to the former prime minister, has awarded 187 scholarships since 2003.
