The McMaster community will have a unique opportunity to participate in a Town Hall meeting with the President of SSHRC, Dr. Chad Gaffield, on Monday February 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in Convocation Hall.

Gaffield — appointed president in September 2006 — is interested in engaging in discussion with the various University stakeholders to better understand our research efforts in the human sciences and to hear about McMaster's experiences with, and expectations of, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Last year SSHRC funded more than 5,000 full-time faculty members, and directly supported almost 3,000 graduate students across Canada.

“The research SSHRC supports brings groundbreaking knowledge and new ways of thinking to Canada's public discourse,” Gaffield says.

The Town Hall meeting is an informal forum that will be moderated by Geoffrey Rockwell, an associate professor in humanities computing and multimedia in the School of the Arts. Everyone is welcome to drop by Convocation Hall between 10:30 a.m. and noon, whether you can attend all or part of the session. Refreshments will be served.

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) is an arm's-length federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the social sciences and humanities. Created by an act of Parliament in 1977, SSHRC is governed by a 22-member Council that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry.
