Thousands expected at Connect to Careers job fair

Connect to careers

As many as to 4,000 students, alumni and members of the public are expected to attend the second annual Connect to Careers Job Fair at the Careport Centre on Jan. 23 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

In addition to welcoming students and alumni from Mohawk College and Redeemer University College, this year’s fair will open its doors to the public from 1 to 4 p.m. as a result of a partnership with Workforce Planning Hamilton.

“This partnership,” says Gisela Oliviera, manager of employment and career services in the Student Success Centre, “is about working together to connect students with local employers. We not only want to help them get a job, we’d like them to stay in Hamilton and help shape its future.”

Those who attend the fair will have an opportunity to connect with more than 120 employers from a variety of employment sectors and receive a resume critique and professional LinkedIn profile photograph.

Also new this year is a keynote presentation from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. from Kelley Keehn, author, financial guru and frequent guest on the Marilyn Dennis show. Keehn will talk about money – how to manage it and make it last longer – to prepare aspiring employees for the responsibilities that come with making a regular paycheck.

Some of the companies planning to attend  the fair include: IKEA, Toyota, Camp Kodiak, Canadian Forces, Sun Life Financial, Future Stars Sports Photography, Kognitive Marketing, L-3 Wescam, McDonalds of Canada, PepsiCo, Hydro One, Paragon Security and Losani Homes.

Opportunities range from summer and co-op positions to full and part-time opportunities. ArcelorMittal Dofasco is a platinum sponsor this year and Maple Leaf Consumer Foods, Acuren Group Inc. and McKeil Marine Ltd. are gold sponsors. The City of Hamilton’s Economic Development department is a partner of the event, providing  free shuttles for the students from all three locations.
