McMaster University, in cooperation with the Hamilton-Wentworth
District School Board (HWDSB), will use the CIS Women's Basketball
Championship as an opportunity to mentor 100 Hamilton middle-
school girls as part of the Project G.O. - Girls Only program.
Designed to provide mentorship and positive role models to
female students in grades
six, seven, and eight, Project G.O. is a HWDSB initiative that has been
in operation since 2008.
Seizing on the opportunity to expose girls in the program to a
high profile womens athletic event, McMaster University student Lara
Pilutti proposed a partnership with Project G.O. around the basketball
tournament being held at McMaster today (March 12). The idea was
met with a great deal of enthusiasm.
A PhD candidate in kinesiology and varsity lacrosse player, Pilutti
assumed the organizers role and has designed a program that will see
25 McMaster female varsity athletes serve as hosts for the 100 girls
that will attend the championship.
"The CIS Women's Basketball Championship will bring together
top female athletes from across the country," said Pilutti. "This event
will provide an ideal setting to promote the ideals of Project G.O.,
such as building self-esteem, motivating girls to have a healthy
lifestyle and dreaming big for the future."
The girls will spend the morning involved in three activity
sessions at McMaster's David
Braley Athletic Centre, with a focus on fitness/aerobics, nutrition and
leadership. A
luncheon will be provided for the girls, who will then attend the
opening game of the CIS
Women's Basketball Championship scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
"When we approached HWDSB with the concept, they were very
positive about a
collaboration," said Pilutti. "The girls will be able to experience new
things, discover what's possible and spend time with some really great
role models all while being in a university setting."
Project G.O. - Girls Only, which is similar to HWDSB's Boys to Men
initiative, is designed to provide mentorship and positive role models
to young female students who might be experiencing challenges in
their lives. The goal is to empower young girls by encouraging them
to build self-esteem so they can contribute to a stronger future for
the next generation of women.
