McMaster's new network of outdoor warning sirens is about to undergo its first full test.
The sirens will be tested Wednesday Feb. 3 at 2:20 p.m.
The sirens are part of a notification system to alert students, faculty, staff and the campus community about emergencies. They are meant to signal a lockdown. During the test on Feb. 3 the sirens will sound and be followed by a voice announcement. No action is required from the campus community.
A new text messaging notification system for students will also be tested.
Text messages will be sent to students who have signed up for the notification system. Students are encouraged to subscribe to the text message system that delivers emergency messages to cell phones and handheld devices by logging into MUGSI and clicking on the Emergency Mass Notification link found under My Profile. The messages will be sent only in case of an imminent, ongoing campus-wide threat or danger to the safety of the McMaster community. The system is tested once every semester.
If this were an actual lockdown, there are steps you should take that include going to the nearest room or office and closing and locking the door should you hear these sirens.
If you are outdoors when the sirens sound, you should seek the closest safe shelter.
