TB notice to McMaster community

default-hero-image

This notice is to advise you that a McMaster student has been diagnosed with active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB).

The City of Hamilton's public health and community services department oversees all investigations into TB infections and as a precaution has notified the public and is contacting individually any persons they believe may have had contact with the student.

Tuberculosis is a lung infection that can be spread to other people when they are in close, frequent contact with a sick person for a long period of time. Each year in Hamilton, there are about 25 cases of active TB. Within a large institution like McMaster, the statistical average is about one or two cases a year.

Public health is working in conjunction with the University's Campus Health Centre and the University to identify those who potentially had exposure with the student.

Information on TB, how it is transmitted, symptoms and treatments can be found at www.health.gov.on.ca, or the McMaster Campus Health Centre at www.mcmaster.ca/health.

Anyone with any concerns should contact the Public Health Department at 905-546-2424, ext. 6636 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, or contact their family physician.
