The 16-year-old was in her marketing class at Cathedral High School in Hamilton when she heard about the Synergy summer business program offered at DeGroote. The program, which runs week-long sessions throughout the summer, introduces teens to the exciting world of commerce.
Students learn about stocks and the market in DeGroote's Allen H. Gould Trading Floor. They develop a business plan for a new company. And on a trip to the GTA, they connect with senior business executives and learn what it takes to be the leaders of tomorrow.
“You can use business in everyday life. Business is a part of every job. Synergy is a great way to get experience and get ahead of the game,” says the ambitious teen who has signed up for every business course offered at her high school and even spent a week studying marketing at Queen's University this spring.
Wlusek's participation in Synergy has been supported by The Rotary Club of Hamilton A.M. The Rotary Club has funded six scholarships for the camp. Each scholarship covers the full cost of a one-week session at Synergy.
“This opportunity has introduced me to a larger part of the world of business. I'm able to expand my knowledge in the field of commerce and enhanced my skills in various functions of business before entering university,” she explains.
Wlusek is looking forward to gaining exposure to other areas of business and building her skills through Synergy. She is drawn to marketing, but isn't sure what she wants her career to be yet.
“Everyone considers the usual doctor or lawyer, but there's so much more out there to explore!” she says.
She plans to eventually study business at McMaster.
