Several McMaster students living in Ainslie Wood and Westdale were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the community and their efforts to be good neighbours and residents yesterday.

The nine students are the 2010 recipients of the Good Neighbour awards presented annually by the Ainslie Wood-Westdale Community Association of homeowners (AWWCA), Hamilton Police Services, McMaster Students Union and the University.

Each year students who have a positive influence in their neighbourhooods and demonstrate the qualities of a good neighbour are nominated by community members.

"We have a really great relationship with our neighbours," said Amanda Schroeder, a Good Neighbour award-winner. "It really gives us a sense of community and belonging in Hamilton."

This year's award recipients live on Sterling Street, Haddon Avenue South and Thorndale Crescent.

"Each year, many McMaster students have a positive and community-building impact on our neighbourhoods," said Shelli Eisenberg, student liaison with AWWCA. "These awards recognize the important relationships being built between students and homeowners and we're very proud of these students who go above and beyond to help make our neighbourhoods better places to live, learn and work."

"McMaster students are important and valued citizens in Hamilton," says Phil Wood, dean of students and associate vice-president student affairs. "This year's winners exemplify the best of McMaster and are worthy-recipients of this recognition."

The students received award certificates during a presentation in the McMaster University Student Centre.
