Students paid tribute to their favourite professors at last night's annual Teaching Awards Ceremony, hosted by the McMaster Students Union. The event took place in the CIBC Banquet Hall in the McMaster University Student Centre.

Students presented a Lifetime Teaching Achievement Award to Carl Cuneo, professor and chair of the Department of Sociology.

“In addition to his outstanding teaching in the classroom, Dr. Cuneo is widely recognized for his exemplary contributions to education, lifelong learning and enhancing the quality of student life overall at McMaster and in the community-at-large,” said President Peter George, who presented the award. “He has touched the lives of many individuals in many different capacities and continues to influence the lives of those around him. He is a mentor, a colleague, teacher, researcher, student, and in many ways, an inspiration to us all.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to instructors who have shown dedication to teaching at McMaster for at least 10 years, have been nominated for an MSU Teaching Award in the past and are close to retirement. This award recognizes the significant contribution by an instructor to the McMaster community due to their proven years of outstanding teaching but also considers their contributions to academia.

The MSU also awarded 10 Faculty Awards, presented each year to one instructor from each faculty, school or program. These awards recognize outstanding all-round teaching performance of the instructor. This instructor is chosen by student votes and follow-up evaluations.
