The session featured exciting workshop leaders such as Y108, RBC Royal Bank and POWERGROUP Communications.

More than 50 high school students and parents attended the orientation session. Students were introduced to the numerous activities in which they will be participating over the summer. The activities will provide students with a variety of skills such as financial planning, interpersonal communications, marketing, entrepreneurship, team work and public speaking.

Andy Zimmerman, representative for Y108 and CHML 900, announced their featured marketing competition: “Synergy campers will be competing to design an innovative marketing program for our new show, Nights With Alice Cooper.”

Also in attendance was Laura Babcock, president of POWERGROUP Communications, who discussed the exciting workshop she will be leading to teach campers about effective interviewing skills.

“In an interview, only seven per cent of all communication is verbal,” she explained. “The 93 per cent nonverbal component is what makes the difference and it ranges from your first handshake to maintaining eye contact.”

Other featured workshops included resume writing lead by the DeGroote School of Business's Centre for Business Career Development and current MBA student Brian Harskamp, an introduction to entrepreneurship lead by RBC Royal Bank and the Small Business Enterprise Centre and a stock challenge at the Gould Trading Floor.

Following the orientation session, camper Ayomide Yomi-Odedeyi was ecstatic about the program: “I'm actually looking forward to learning in the summer. I'm so excited for the camp.”

Dofasco Inc. will be sponsoring six campers this summer. The Synergy Business Camp is looking for nominations for bright teens who are in need of financial assistance to attend the camp.
