A political science student is taking up the fight with an infectious disease by organizing a charity concert in downtown Hamilton.

Lucas Canzona and his Sound of Change promotion company will welcome the indie pop Alvvays to Hamilton’s Casbah Oct. 5 in support of Doctors Without Borders, an organization working to combat the Ebola virus in West Africa.

Canzona founded The Sound of Change three years ago after realizing there was an opportunity to promote local bands and raise funds for organizations that focus on international development at the same time.

The first show he organized was in support of Doctors Without Borders.

“They are working tirelessly to fight the Ebola virus overseas,” he says. “Their groundbreaking humanitarian work in conflict zones is a cause we supported with our first-ever show, and we’re happy to play our small part again.”

To date, The Sound of Change has raised nearly $7,000 for charitable organizations such as UNICEF, War Child and Doctors Without Borders, and has worked with nearly 50 bands.

Canzona has big expectations for the sold-out Alvvays show, given the amount of national and international press the band has gained since releasing their debut self-titled album this summer.

“Alvvays is Canada’s next breakout indie band,” he says. “Alvvays’ songwriting is filled with lo-fi melodies and jangly guitars, introspective lyrics and road-trip ready rhythms.”
