The third-year theatre and film studies student isn't acting in a play; she landed a summer job as an events and marketing assistant at Career Services. But it's more than a summer job for Janke, who hopes to work in the field after she graduates.

“Working as an events and marketing assistant is an ideal job for me because I want to work in event management after I have completed my education,” says Janke. “What I like most about it is that I am constantly learning and being offered the opportunity to grow in areas that I have not had a chance to experience prior to this job.”

In addition to the experience she has gained, Janke says that her supervisor has been instrumental as a mentor.

The position has enabled Janke to develop her organizational and communication skills as well as learn about allocating funds and budgeting.

As an events and marketing assistant, Janke is responsible for recruiting volunteers and managing the McMaster Ambassador Volunteer Program for the 2007-08 academic year. The program involves about 10 group coordinators and between 50 and 80 volunteers. She also helps plan and organize fairs hosted by Career Services, including the Career Fair in September, the Continuing Education Fair in October and the Virtual Summer Job Fair in February.

“A lot of what my job entails is brainstorming creative ideas for many of the programs offered for students by Career Services to help maintain the excellent resources that our centre provides,” says Janke. “In a typical day, I am usually working toward completing tasks for the week, whether it is working towards volunteer recruitment or planning for volunteer training.”

Janke would recommend her position to other students looking for work experience.

“It is an excellent way to strengthen existing skills as well as learning some new ones,” she says. “Career Services offers a great work atmosphere with awesome staff and supervisors.”
