Student athletes honoured

[img_inline align=”right” src=”http://padnws01.mcmaster.ca/images/trophyandgear.jpg”]McMaster announced the 2004/2005 athletic award winners at the 81st annual Athletic Awards Presentation last night.
The Female Athlete of the Year was Ellen Macro from the
women's wrestling team. Macro stunned the Canadian wrestling community at the 2005 CIS Wrestling Championships by soundly defeating two-time defending CIS Champion Emily Richardson of Simon Fraser University in the final of the 61 Kg weight class. Richardson, the defending national open champion and a member of the Canadian National team, hadn't lost in three years in CIS competition prior to being upset by Macro. Macro is a three-time Marauder scholar for achieving greater than 80 per cent in the classroom. Sarah Sterling, basketball, and Melissa Nock, badminton, also received nominations.
The Male Athlete of the Year was Jesse Lumsden from the McMaster football team. Lumsden set a new CIS single season rushing record with 1,816 yards in 178 carries this season. He averaged 227 yards per game and an outstanding 10.20 yards per carry. He was selected as the Hec Crighton recipient as Canada's Most Outstanding University football player. Adam Guiney, basketball, and Dan Pletch, rugby, also received nominations.
The Dr. Ray Johnson award winner was Jon Little from the McMaster men's cross country team. The Dr. Ray Johnson award is presented annually to a graduating member, trainer or organizer of a varsity team, that has participated in each year they have attended McMaster and has demonstrated leadership ability on their teams and within the community while exhibiting the “Spirit of McMaster”. Little led a community outreach project that saw the McMaster Cross Country team paint and refurbish recreational facilities for the Big Brothers Association of Hamilton. Little was also named to the Provost's Honour Roll at McMaster as one of only 14 students from the entire university population to achieve a perfect grade point average across a full course load. Kwame Aidoo, football, and Jeremy Patry, basketball, also received nominations.
The Dr. Edna Guest award winner was Katie McIntyre from the McMaster golf team. The Dr. Edna Guest award for a graduating student-athlete that has participated in each year they have attended McMaster that radiate the “Spirit of McMaster”. McIntyre had been both a member of the golf team and the basketball team in her four years at McMaster. She has been part of the McMaster Athletic Council (MAC) executive and one of the lead organizers of this year's Athletic Award recognition function. McIntyre is a two-time Marauder scholar for achieving greater than 80 per cent in the classroom. Margo Sloan, fencing, and Amanda Baxter, rugby, also received nominations.
The Bruce Cochrane Award winner was Chris Adachi, student basketball Convenor. The Bruce Cochrane Award is presented annually to a support staff member, displaying unwavering dedication and service to their group or team. Adachi has worked as the McMaster Basketball Convenor the last four seasons and he has become an integral part of the staging of basketball events including both the 2002 and 2003 CIS Women's Basketball Championship. Adachi is a four-time Deans Honour Award recipient for achieving greater than 80 per cent in the classroom. Rhiannon Vickers, Facilities, and David Del Duca, soccer, also received nominations.
The Les Prince Award winner was Deb Van Bolderen, from the women's fastpitch team. The Les Prince Award is presented annually to the
student-athlete who demonstrates leadership and outstanding community service through the participation in the McMaster Outreach Programme. Van Bolderen was the driving force behind the Fast Pitch team raising of $4,000 for the Hamilton Food Share. She is also a former member of the women's volleyball team, and was a Marauder Scholar in 2003 for achieving greater than 80 per cent in the classroom.
The Joyce Wignall Award winner was the McMaster fastpitch team.
The Joyce Wignall Award is presented annually to the Marauder team that has made the most significant contribution through the McMaster Outreach program. The McMaster Fastpitch team raised $4,000 for Hamilton Food Share.
