Fire Prevention Week 2009, running from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10, focuses on burn awareness and prevention as well as keeping homes safe from the leading causes of home fires.

During this week, and throughout the entire year, Environmental & Occupational Health Support Services offers in-class and online training on fire safety as well as an online resource page. You can find valuable fire safety resources as well as fire safety awareness videos at EOHSS Fire Prevention.

We encourage all members of the McMaster community to take a moment to review some basic fire safety tips:

  • check your smoke detectors monthly to ensure they are functioning properly, and change the battery twice annually
  • practice fire safety in your home by closely monitoring cooking, limiting candle use, and ensuring you have a functioning fire extinguisher in your home
  • have an escape plan: if you are at home or at work, be familiar with what your plan is to leave the building when your alarms sound
  • take the opportunity during fire prevention week to practice your plan
  • Fire Prevention Week was established to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that killed more than 250 people, left 100,000 homeless, destroyed more than 17,400 structures and burned more than 2,000 acres.
